How the JLPT N5 works

Format, pass marks and how to use these tests

The N5 is the first level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. It checks that you can read basic sentences in hiragana, katakana and simple kanji, and follow slow, everyday conversations. It has three parts (times and number of questions since December 2020):

Scores and pass marks

You get two scores: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) & Reading, from 0 to 120, and Listening, from 0 to 60. To pass you need at least 80 out of 180 in total, and at least 38 in the first part and 19 in Listening. Miss one of the minimums and you fail, even with a high total.

The real test turns your answers into scaled scores and doesn’t publish how. Our scores are an estimate based on your correct answers.

How to use these tests

  • Short on time? A quick test (10 minutes) or one question type (5 minutes) a day adds up.
  • Study mode first: no timer, and the explanation right after each answer. Read the traps: they repeat on the real test.
  • Exam mode when you feel ready: real time limits, no hints, and every explanation at the end. You can also take one part at a time.
  • Listening: in exam mode each recording plays once, like on test day. In study mode you can play it again, and after you answer you can read everything you heard, with the translation.
  • Everything you miss goes to Review your mistakes until you get it right.
  • Your scores are saved on this device, and on your card if you get one.

Are these the official questions?

No. These are original questions written by our team in the official format: the same question types, number of questions and time limits. For the official sample questions, see the JLPT website.
