4. は marks the topic, what the sentence is about: わたしは 学生です = 'As for me, I'm a student.' A は B です is the very first pattern of every self-introduction.
Trick: Self-introductions always have the same shape: わたしは + name / job + です. A person at the start and です at the end? Think は.
