Hiragana is the curvy script for Japanese words and grammar: は, を, です… There are 46 basic kana — tap any of them to hear it, or tap a row letter to hear the whole row. One trap: を is typed wo but said o.
Two little dashes (dakuten) make the sound “voiced”: か ka → が ga. A small circle (handakuten) turns h into p: は ha → ぱ pa.
Two more tricks: a small っ doubles the next sound — きって kitte (stamp) — and long vowels get an extra vowel: おかあさん okāsan (mom).
A kana from the i column plus a small ゃ ゅ ょ melts into one beat: き ki + ゃ ya → きゃ kya.
Katakana is the sharp script for words from other languages: コーヒー (coffee), テレビ (TV), your name. There are 46 basic kana — tap any of them to hear it, or tap a row letter to hear the whole row.
Two little dashes (dakuten) make the sound “voiced”: カ ka → ガ ga. A small circle (handakuten) turns h into p: ハ ha → パ pa.
Two more tricks: in katakana a long vowel is a dash — ケーキ kēki (cake) — and a small ッ doubles the next sound: ベッド beddo (bed).
A kana from the i column plus a small ャ ュ ョ melts into one beat: キ ki + ャ ya → キャ kya.

あ か さ た な first, then は ま や ら わ ん. Five kana a day is plenty.
Each kana gets a little picture story in Levels 2, 3, 5 and 6. Stories stick; copying 50 times doesn’t.
